Enablers, as they concern getting the right things done, can be understood as elements which, when introduced into your environment, ease entry into certain behaviours.
Think of the moments you get back from work, collapse onto your couch, and reach for your YouTube device. When the device is not there, thinking about watching YouTube goes with the wind. But when the device is there, reaching for it is almost automatic. Under the weight of tiredness, you simply pick it up and begin watching. In that sense, the device enables hours of scrolling through YouTube.
Of course, enablers are indifferent to your cause. They are neither the cause nor the motive of your behaviour. They simply make entry into the behaviour easier.
Enablers for getting the right things done are particularly relevant at points when resistance is high. The task itself need not be herculean. It simply has to present a high activation energy. Getting out of bed in the morning, when both will and energy are low, is a good example. The action itself is simple, yet the resistance to initiating it is high.
The opportunity, then, is to identify enablers that make effective behaviours easier to enter.
Sounds, music in particular, is an especially powerful enabler. It is one of the most reliable ways to alter your environment. You can be on your couch, weighed down by the agonizing presence of boredom, attempting and failing to lift yourself to carry out an action, only for music to come online and have you up and on your feet within seconds.
The thing is, at moments of high resistance, even the task of walking over to your player to start the music can itself become a challenge. The remedy, then, is to reduce the activation energy even further. If the resistance is partly due to the fact that your headset is in another room, removing that barrier by reducing the task to simply opening the music app and pressing Play can help. The easier it is to activate the enabler, the more likely it is to overcome the resistance it is meant to dissolve.
The broader takeaway, then, is to deliberately design your environment with enablers that support the behaviours you want, so that at low moments, when resistance is high and willpower is less reliable, entry into those behaviours requires as little activation energy as possible.
